About the Fellowship

The Swanson Initiative Youth Civic Fellowship is a 6-month intensive program designed to develop the next generation of community leaders. Fellows receive mentorship from established civic leaders, gain hands-on experience through internship placements, and participate in workshops on government, voting rights, and community organizing.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ages 16-24 at time of application
  • Resident of Birmingham-Bessemer metropolitan area or willingness to relocate
  • Demonstrated interest in public service, community organizing, or civic leadership
  • Available for 10-15 hours per week (flexible scheduling available)
  • Commitment to complete the full 6-month program
  • High school diploma or currently enrolled in high school (juniors and seniors)

What Fellows Receive

  • $2,000 Stipend: Paid upon successful completion of program
  • Mentorship: One-on-one guidance from established civic leaders
  • Internship Placement: At local government offices, nonprofits, or community organizations
  • Educational Workshops: Sessions on government structure, voting rights, community advocacy, and leadership
  • Networking: Access to Birmingham-Bessemer civic and professional networks
  • Transportation Support: Transit stipends available for those who qualify
  • College/Career Support: Letters of recommendation and college/career counseling
