Program Overview

What is the Swanson Civic Fellowship?

A year-long leadership development program that combines:

  • Mentorship – One-on-one guidance from experienced civic leaders, educators, and community organizers
  • Education – Workshops on government, voting rights, community organizing, and public speaking
  • Experience – Hands-on internships with local government offices, nonprofits, and civic institutions
  • Community – A cohort of peers committed to service and social change
  • Support – Stipends, transportation assistance, and resources to ensure accessibility
Eligibility

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to youth ages 16-24 who:

  • Live in or have strong connections to the Birmingham-Bessemer area
  • Demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement and community service
  • Show leadership potential and a desire to learn
  • Are willing to commit to the full program year (September–August)

No prior experience required – just passion and dedication!

Application Timeline:

  • Applications open: March 1st
  • Applications close: May 15th
  • Interviews: June
  • Decisions announced: July 1st
  • Fellowship begins: September

Required Materials:

  • Completed application form
  • Personal statement (500-750 words) about your civic interests and goals
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Resume or activity list (can be informal)
