Our purpose
Formation that becomes community contribution.
The Reginald Swanson Fellowship brings professional development and spiritual formation into one shared journey. Fellows do not study the community from a distance—they learn with it, conduct ethical research within it, and create something useful for it.
Every fellow is supported by a working-group mentor and a peer. Together, they form a discipleship triad where faith, accountability, research, and calling meet.

We envision a lasting, intergenerational fellowship of scholars, mentors, advocates, and institution builders who preserve community wisdom, create opportunity, and steward Birmingham–Bessemer’s future together.

Listen locally
Community members are knowledge holders and partners—not subjects. Fellows begin with their stories, priorities, and lived experience.
Work on real needs
Research assignments come from active working groups and lead toward decisions, resources, programs, or public understanding.
Return the value
Every project ends with an accessible deliverable published for the community and presented at the annual Fellowship Showcase.

Orientation
Discover your gifts, enter the fellowship covenant, meet your mentor and peer, and learn the story of the Swanson Initiative.
Exploration
Build research foundations, listen to residents and institutions, and frame a question rooted in a real community need.
Development
Work inside a Swanson Initiative working group, test ideas, receive mentor feedback, and shape an actionable public project.
Presentation
Publish a community deliverable, present at the Year-End Showcase, and identify your next pathway to leadership.

The heart of the fellowship
The discipleship triad
Every two weeks, one fellow, one peer, and one mentor gather for sixty purposeful minutes: prayer and honest check-in, spiritual formation, research progress, accountability, mentor guidance, and clear commitments.

Fellows, mentors, and BBYM each make commitments. Fellows show up and produce meaningful work. Mentors invest, guide, and give timely feedback. BBYM provides training, working-group placement, publication, recognition, and a pathway to continued leadership.
