Empowering Youth Through Community-Centered Learning
A community-centered program where high school and junior college students empower each other through collaborative learning
BBYM's Peer to Peer Tutoring Program is built on the belief that young people learn best from and alongside each other. Our program connects high school students with trained peer mentors from local junior colleges to create a supportive, culturally affirming learning environment. Through afterschool and weekend sessions—both in-person at The Black Complex and online via BBYouths.org—students engage in active, collaborative learning that strengthens academic skills, builds leadership capacity, and celebrates Birmingham-Bessemer's rich heritage.
This is more than traditional tutoring. It's a community transformation initiative where learning happens through dialogue, creativity, and intergenerational connection. Peer mentors don't just teach subjects—they model leadership, facilitate group learning, and help younger students see themselves as capable scholars and community builders. Together, we're creating a culture of mutual support where everyone grows.
Small group sessions (3-5 students) focused on collaborative problem-solving, critical thinking, and hands-on engagement with core subjects.
In-person sessions at The Black Complex combined with online tutoring through BBYouths.org—accessible wherever students are.
Trained junior college students serve as mentors, creating relatable role models who understand the challenges students face.
Learning anchored in Birmingham-Bessemer's heritage through storytelling, elder wisdom, recipe cards, and creative expression.
Interactive whiteboards, direct messaging, text chat, and collaborative platforms designed for real-time learning support.
